Representation task: Identification of stereotypes in teen films

What is a Stereotype?

A Stereotype is a generalisation about a group of people and what they are known to do. It is also a widely held image or idea of a particular person or thing.

'Not Another Teen Movie' is a film which shows all stereotypes about teenage films and the characters inside of these films. As we can see from the poster we have a cheerleader, the wannabe,the girl that everyone wants and the only black guy along with many other stereotypical characters.













A common stereotype that we see in film in films is the 'Jock'. The Jock is the guy who is built, tall, slick hair and usually wears a baseball jacket and attracts many girls. He is usually cocky and has a lot of friends.There are many other teen films that a Jock can be found in like; American Pie, John Tucker Must Die and 10 Thing I Hate About You.

Another Stereotype which is very common in a teen film is cheer-leading. Cheer-lading is quiet common because in teen films the boys are the ones usually playing the sports and the girls are the ones cheering the guys on. Cheer-leaders are usually bitchy, have a good figure, childish, wear make-up and are very feminine. 

These stereotypical characters can be found in films like ; Bring it On, John Tucker Must Die and Drumline. 

The desperate virgin is another stereotype widely used in teen films. He usually goes unnoticed by the girls and is short, qwerky and usually found fantasising about girls with his friends. The desperate virgin can usually be found in films such as American Pie, Super-bad and Mean Girls.

The Token Black Guy is another character that could been found in teen films. He is found in the midst of groups, usually butting into there conversations to say things like 'Damn!' He also has an Afro and wears urban clothes. This character can be found in many films and not only teen films; The Expendables, Ghost Busters and Star Wars.

The fat guy is also found in teen films. He is usually the one who doesn't care about much apart from food. He also wears the biggest clothes, always has food in his hand and has his best friends. This character can be found in films like Super-bad.
