Planning Final Project Ideas

Planning ideas for our film

We were looking at various films such as Kidulthood, Bulletboy and Higher Learning. We are inspired most by the film, "Higher Learning" as our group only consists of three people and we came to a conclusion with our teacher that we will be able to use this film in the best way possible as a template for our own film. As we are using the film "Higher Learning" as a template, we decided that the plot of our film would be based on three teenagers with powers they was unaware of.

We have decided to use the structure of 'Higher Learning as a structure for our own final film. We have discussed as a group about the location and some of the props we may need such as a lift that we are able to film in for the lift scene and the room which each teenager is based in for their scene.  However we decided to add an idea that something would happen in the lift (lights flicker, someone gets stuck between the doors).

The props we will use for our film would be; a cans of beer, basketball, headphones, lighter, cigarette, books, newspaper.

The costumes we will need for our film would be; Lukas who loves rock music and drinks a lot of alcohol, this person would wear jeans, trainers and has a headset around his head. Barnabas will wear tracksuit bottoms with a t-shirt and carries a backpack, this will reflect on his background as an alcoholic and not really caring about his surroundings. This will also show a positive background for him as he is trying to get into university which shows that he wants to be successful. Khajal will wear jeans, top and a jacket, this will reflect on her background as she is looking for a job and smokes cigarettes.

We will have rock music for lukas, hip hop music for Barnabas and for Khajal we will have pop girly music.

The locations we will be filming in;

The estate where we will be mostly filming.

The basketball court where we will also be filming.

Fine Foods is the shop where we will also be filming.

OUR STORYBOARD PLAN

Higher Learning Sound Practice

We have been experimenting to show how sound can be used in order to introduce a character as practise for our final project.  I have used the 90's film "Higher Learning" as my practise tool. The main aspect of using sound in this way would be to heavily stereotype the characters, I used rap music for the black male, pop music for the white female and rock music for the rough looking white male.

Below is the end result.

Researching Music And Sound

As you will have used 4 pieces of music that i have discovered on creative commons. Each music i used reflects the character that is being presented on video.

Camera Tutorial- Practice Storyboard

Camera Tutorial- Practice Storyboard

Through our practice shots from our storyboard we have learnt that we have to put the camera in different angles to get a variety of different shots and not let it look the same. We also have to learn not to leave so much 'white space' and use the 'Thirds Rule'.  Lastly, we would have to practice on our point of view and over the shoulder shots. If we can practice this and get it to a good standard then our opening film would be very good.

Research - Sounds In Movies

This Is Based On Sounds In teen Movie Openings
The sounds used in movie openings is vital due to it doing many different things. The sounds can create a type of mood for the scenery or and atmosphere for the environment of what may be happening. It can also help portray the story of the movie and the dialogue in the sound can also aid. The sound can also contribute to allowing the audience to know that a flashback is taking place.

Research: 1
An example would be Step Up which is a teen film about a young adult who comes from a underprivileged area in America, who later gets the opportunity to earn a scholarship in a Arts School through helping out a student which already attends the school. During the course of the film the manages to fall in love with the student and the thought of dancing, which causes conflict to increase between friendship.

Higher Learning Sound Remake

High Learning Sound Remake

We used a website called Creative Commons to find sounds that was non-copyright to put over our film. As a reminder we have put the instructions below for future reference.

  1. Go to Creative Commons.
  2. Choose Explore-Find CC licensed works
  3. Choose Site(Preferably Sound Cloud)
  4. Find and Download Song
  5. Move to Appropriate folder
  6. Add to Final Cut Pro!

This is our Completed version

In the future we could better our sounds by making sure the sounds are in sync with the movement on screen. For instance, when the base of the music comes in the character could of sat down. We could also make sure that the sounds fades in rather than it stopping and not sounding as good. Lastly, Experiment on many sounds and use Foley sound and other sound effects!

Planning Final Project: Ideas

We have watched many films and TV shows such as BulletBoy, Kidulthood, Boyz 'N' The Hood, Higher Learning and Social Network. This has given us a lot of inspiration as we are a small group of 3 as to what type of film genre we should go into.

Comparing 'The breakfast Club' with Our own Re-make
We tried remaking the opening scene of 'The Breakfast club' in the given location that we had which was our college.

Shot by Shot Remake (Compare)

Shot by Shot Remake (Compare)

Our remake of the breakfast club has many different variations to the original from costumes to cars. However, I think that we was able to get our point and understand of the opening scene across very well. Firstly, the 'Jock' wasn't wearing the stereotypical baseball jacket but we was still able to represent him quiet well as with his body language. He was wearing a hood and he had been walking with a sort of 'I don't care' attitude.

Secondly, we didn't have a real car or access to props for a car so we used a sofa and a fig-rig. I believe we was able to portray our idea well and the audience could identify what it was and the characters that was being shown.

Most importantly, our remake could have been identified because of the camera shots that was taken. We had a variety of mid, wide and close-up shots. This helped show the characters, their body language and there costumes. It had been very important to do this as it was essential to get the mise en scene as we didn't have all the props to remake the breakfast club as well as we could of.

In all, I think that our remake in comparison to the original was good and we done well with the props, time and settings that we had. However, we could have been more specific with characters and show more of them entering in a better way rather than them just being in cars.

Shot by Shot(Remake) Breakfast Club

Below are the photos from the shoot of the remake of the travelling and entering scene.

These three images are the pictures of different angles in which the Jock had entered the college. We have a over shoulder shot and long shots of him entering.

Detailed planning for Breakfast Club

Detailed planning for Breakfast Club

Throughout the remake of the Breakfast Club we used many props from camera tools to our actual college in order to resemble the film as realistic as possible.

We used many features at our college like the lockers, sofa's (to resemble a car) and our college library. These three features alone had made it easier for us to project our ideas onto camera and resemble the Breakfast club.
We was also provided with props like a Jock's hoodie, sunglasses/glasses, trophies and toy cars

We used the toy cars as real cars and had to zoom in with the camera to make it bigger than it actually was. Another prop that we used that was very handy was a fig-rig. We used the fig-rig as a steering wheel and because it actually resembled the steering wheel of the ones used in those days it was perfect.
Lastly, we used areas in and around our college like the canteen, library and the entrance of our college which was really the most important in our scene.

All props used in the making of our remake was either already brought or in our college. This has made it easier and quicker for us to do what we needed to do and get our point across in the best way possible.

This is evidence on how our group had made the remake of 'The Breakfast Club'

This is the the beginning shot of when the kids where arriving to school for their morning detention.
Our camera person used the entrance of our college to remake the  shot of the school in the film.

This is our group in the canteen part of our college remaking the shot of when the children are sitting down on the tables and chairs, this was useful as  we were able to use our surrounding to our advantage.

This is a shot of when our group started editing our shots of our remake. We decided to cut and place our shots together using smooth transactions making the film flow more smoothly.

The Breakfast club- Planning

For our remake of 'The Breakfast Club'

The props we needed were; toy cars, a pair of glasses for the girl who was the geek.

we used the toy car to act out  the scene where the the kids were traveling to the school

we can use the outside of our college to act out as if it was the high school of where the kids would go to.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB PHOTO

We had to find somewhere were we could film the detention scene with tables and chairs where the kids would sit. As the the film was set in America in a High School and being able to use the college as our location was convenient as we didn't have to travel far to find a suitable location.

we also found a similar clock that 'The Breakfast club' had used.           THE BREAKFAST CLUB PHOTO

We used the lockers around our college to act out as the lockers in the film where they are filled with rubbish.

Travelling And Arriving

Breakfast Club
In The Breakfast Club, the teenagers arrive at school by different forms of transport, this can either define or stereotype a person character and tell the audience a little about them. This portray a little of who they are right at the start of the film. Travelling and arriving forms a key part of an opening of a teen drama.

The first character is a girl who arrives in a BMW, in an instant the audience can tell she has is wealthy and well of this is due to her having a very expensive car, opening her character to the audience. Also the discussion she had with her father gives an image that she is spoilt and treated like royalty.

The second character that arrives in a less expensive car, in the car shows to be him is siblings and his mother all compressed against each other, this portrays that he is not as wealthy as the first character and he has got some struggle as a normal teen.
