Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social

The film HIDDEN shows 3 teenagers who do not have any jobs and are trying to get their lives on track. They are shown as being 'alienated' from the society that they live in and find it hard to fit in.

The feedback that I have received from people who have seen my film is mostly positive. We targeted an audience which is mostly teens and young adults. The teens believe that all 3 characters are stereotyped in a correct way as their actions allow students to relate to their actual lives. However, some liked the way that I wasn't sterotyped to be the criminal and I was the one who was into my books and Lukas was the one shown as the guy who stole money from others. This is because in today's day and age a lot of young black boys are stereotyped into being in gangs and stealing whilst white guys are more sensible and seen to be the ones into their books.

Lukas- The one who was the 'bad guy' and was tempeted to get his things by stealing.

Barnabas-The one who had ambitions to be a Basketballer but knew he had to get his education first to be 'safe'.

Kay- The girl who was a dropout and had to start looking for a job at a young age.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my film would be aimed at 15-21 year olds because our film is based on 3 teenagers which are struggling to live their lives. A lot of teens in london have stuggles of living their life in and out of school so many would be able to relate to the story that me and my group have put across. One character is unemployed, one is trying to get to university and the other is shop lifting. The audience that we have targeted our film at even though some may not live the life the 3 character live would be able to relate in one way or another.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

My film starts of with me running and throwing a basketball. From this the audience can immediately see the misé en scene which is an estate with a basketball court. Many teens in London can already be attracted to my film as this is what they are surrounded by in and around London. We are then led into the two other characters who is a boy and a girl, the boy being the thief and the girl being the one who is looking for a job whilst being addicted to smoke at a young age. Teens would be attracted to this as they are faced with the challenges that all three characters whether it being ambitious like my character, falling into temptation like Lukas' character or being lazy like Kay's character.

The audience could also relate as the areas we filmed in is very much like any London estate and even kids who do not live in estates can relate as we film in streets also. The sound also makes our film relatable to more teens than we would expect as we use an American soundtrack rather than English.

This is our poster for our film and we have also put ratings on the poster so it attracts more people to it.

Q4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my film would be aimed at 15-21 year olds because my film is based on 3 teenagers who are struggling to live their lives. One character is unemployed, one is trying to get to university and the other is shop lifting. The targeted audience is appropriate as London is stereotyped of having those 3 characters.

Target Audience

  • 17 years old
  • Male & Female
  • Enjoys British films and episodes such as Anuvahood and Misfits.
  • Enjoys sports, hanging out with friends and going out
  • Listens to hip hop and grime

A Teen film would include negative stereotypes of teenagers, I believe this would attract my target audience teenagers as they would like to see how society has stereotyped them in films, however not all teens are like how films tend to stereotype them. Also the Mise en scene engages the audience as the clothing which is worn by the three characters can relate to the stereotypes of teenagers in London.

Q3 What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product?

Coursework Evaluation Question 5

Q5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

I believe our opening to our film attracts an audience of teenagers as you see a young black person playing basketball, you can also see urban estates which allows the audience to relate to their lifestyle. The opening shot allows us to see that the film is based in an urban area which would be most likely in London and the film is called HIDDEN so this would immediately allow the audience to think that is this character hiding from someone or something which would then engage the audience towards the film.

The opening scene also allows us to understand that the character is probably in a street basketball court, this would then allow the audience to believe that he a street person.
You can also see that he is wearing a plan white t-shirt, this would then reflect on his lifestyle as he isn't wearing any designer clothes.

The feedback which was given to my group from the rough cut was very helpful as we were able to introduce new props such as a gym bag, university book and newspaper. These props help strengthen my film as each prop reflects onto their personality and background. The feedback given also allowed us to look at our footage and reshoot several scenes for example the lift scene, our rough cut was really dark so the feedback allowed us to understand what was wrong. To overcome this problem we used lights to brighten up the lift scene however even with all the lights used the place was still quite dark. The lift scene was a major part of our film as the lift opens doors for each character in a very unusual way.

To reach our targeted audience we went to cinema to view our film. To attract an audience of teenagers, cinema would be ideal as many teenagers enjoy going to the cinema to watch films.
We also received feedback from students at the cinema which allowed us to understand what parts were good and what may of needed a little tweaking but overall the feedback was mostly positive.
Our film was posted on Vimeo, this is also an ideal way to attract an audience of teenagers as many of them go on Vimeo to watch videos.  We also posted a page on Facebook about our film, Facebook is a major part in the advertising of our film and attracting our audience as huge numbers of teenagers use Facebook so this was a very sensible way of reaching our targeted audience.

Q7 Looking Back At You Preliminary Task, What Do You Feel Like You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To The Full Product?

Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary film, I have realised that I have picked up a lot of different skills such as now I am able to edit using Final Cut Pro whereas before I wasn’t able to even cut up my shots and fit them together. I also picked up how to use various websites such as prezi, making slide, using motion control, also how to put my work up onto You-Tube.

When I started my preliminary film at the beginning of the year, I had to know how to storyboard my film, so it all comes together. This meant that I was to capture my film in still pictures with a still camera then be able to put each shot into a box for my storyboard, this was to create at boarder line or a basic story that I could follow when I was filming and editing putting it together.

Once that was done, we learnt about different camera angles , and the impact it made on the film whilst the audience was watching. For example; a low shot would mostly be used to give a character status or power showing the audience that specific character is higher then others. Just the same with a high angle would show the opposite and show the character to be small and low in status.

I also learnt the 180 Degree Rule; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CN-acxaFoA

Another technique that I learnt is Match Cutting.
A match cut could also be known as a ‘match on action.’ It is a type of editing that you can use to help the continuity in editing to help the film seem seamless so the audience can follow the action with out realising that an edit has taken place. This then helped to decide which angels I wanted and how they would fit together when it came to editing.

When we started planning our final film, we created a storyboard just like the first time, but this time we had a shot by shot analysis with all the types or shots and angels we would need to take. We then created a PowerPoint Presentation which we pitched and put on all our locations that we would use and extra props. Also our final schedule and plan of how we plan to make our film. This helped us to be a lot more prepared and saved a lot more time as we had planned everything ahead and knew where to be on particular days which we would be filming on.

In my opinion one of my biggest improvements would be my lighting on my film. As in my preliminary due to not having much time and not a lot of varied location the lighting provided was very limited, this meant that some of the shot had come out dark or too bright and was not able to use different lighting techniques. We starting having the same problem with our final film as the location we picked for a part of our film when we watched it back the lighting in the picture was really dark. This meant that we had to find another way to solve this. For Example with this problem I learnt to always film facing the opposite way to the light to the light could reflect onto the character.

In my preliminary I only used what I could find around my college for Mise En Scene as it was very limited this meant that I had filmed it in the college for our scenery and used what I could find. However for my final film it was much better as we had prepared all our props and found convenient locations which where close by and not complicated. This helped It become easier for the audience to relate as it wasn’t much different from where they come from or the props which were used such as; basketball or cigarettes.

Overall comparing my experience and skills from the beginning of the year to now, I can say that I have widen my range of the technology that I can use also I learnt how to edit which I never knew how to do. I also have learnt other things such as how to put sound on top of silent film by using sound cloud, putting titles and credits on to my film and how important head space is in the frame of a camera and how much it can affect your film.

Editing/Feedback (Change of film name) Working Title

As we were doing our rough cut for our film, we got some feedback from Donna and she explained how she wasn't very keen of of our film name 'Outlaws' as our film didn't represent this as much as it could've. She then advised us to try and find another name that was more suitable for our film about three teen agers who come from a socitey that pushes us out, such as employment and crime also the difference between people;

We then decided to look at other film titles to get inspriation and we came up with a couple, for examle 'PUSHED' and 'KIDS.' But in the end we decided we should call it 'HIDDEN' because it sounded better due to teenagers and young adults such as our self and mainly our target audeince too could relate as they are away from society and not much inclued in the community give as motivation lacks and people tened to find other ways of getting thing they need the wrong way.

Heres something Barnabas though about changing the name of the film...

Motion 4

Using Motion

I learnt how to use motion today due to i had to make the production company and the distribution which would then be transferred and added to the beginning of our film.

The first one i did was the production company which as a group decided our one would be call 'Tunnel Vision Productions'  the picture i used was of a tunnel with a lady on a bike :

And then put an animation of tunnel vision running in white down the bottom of the picture.

 Once we put it all together the end result was

I then did the distribution to put on after the production company this ment i had to use k=motion control again. I used a boarder of a film reel, that i got off google, such as;

After I looked for a suitable font that i could use to write 'Film London' in the end we decided;
Then end result was;

Editing Day 3

We are coming to the end of editing and we are putting final scenes together which consists of Kay's scene and the lift scene. We are also looking for the correct font for our order of titles as we do not want our film to have a cliche feel to it. To add to that, we want to add the correct music as the 50 Cent's 'Outlaw' track was copyright and we wasn't able to use it!

Filming (For Final Cut)

Outlaws

On Monday 3rd Of March, we decided to go out and film again as we had realized a couple of things on our rough cut that we needed to improve. This meant that we had to make sure we had exactly everything the same as we did for our first shots such as; clothes, props, same hair styles(make-up) and location

The First Thing We Had To Change Was The Scene Of Kaay when she is gong to light the cigarette and then she steps on it and sits down on the bench to read her newspaper. to improve our shot from what we already had we used a tripod as we noticed that some of them were shaky also we had got more of a variety of angels and close ups.

Another Thing We Had To Improve Was The Entire Lift Scene, as there was numerous faults that we had picked up as we were editing our rough cut. They were things like, the lighting being TERRIBLE because every shot was really dark and the angles being really shaky, also small details like using the same hand for Lukas's part where he hold the lift open.

We Also thought that it would be the best idea to use the tripod more often to make sure the shots weren't shaky also picked up on little details like head spacing and not looking at the camera.

Feedback from Rough Cut

Once we had finished our rough cut the feedback we had received from Donna was that we had to reshoot the ending and add a different variety of music. We also had to look out for other disadvantages which we had to sort out. We then came to the conclusion that we had to film everything from Kay coming into the film as his was a separate day so we didn't carry out the same skills we did as the first. We also understood that we have to keep the same standard throughout the whole film so for these reasons we are deciding to film these scenes again.
We noticed that we didn't follow the thirds rule and there was so many films where there was too much head space. Lastly, the lift scene was too dark so we will film it in the same flat but a different lift where it has more natural light.

Outlaws 'Rough Cut'

Outlaws
Rough Cut

Editing day 2

As we have been working on our film we have used Final Cut Pro, this was because we were able to trim or cut our shots and fit them together.

On Final Cut Pro we have fitted our shots together so they flow smoothly without it looking jerky, this was by doing match cutting and cross cutting. We also had to cut out our natural sounds that were picked up whilst we were filming and add Foley sound so that it would be more enhanced. For example, the Basketball scene's and normal outside scenes.

We also added a soundtrack so the audience can feel the full effect of the surroundings that our characters are in. This music plays throughout the scenes and we hope to find one more track to suit Kay's character as we would't one our scene to be full of just one soundtrack. Lastly, we hope to quieten down our music in scenes where Lukas' character may take his headphones off or other scenes where we may need to put emphasis on the scene rather than the music.
